Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived on Thursday in the eastern city of Holguin, which was struck just 24 hours earlier by Melissa, a powerful hurricane that caused considerable damage in this region of the country.
According to the Cuban Presidency, the president was accompanied by the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party, Roberto Morales, and the main provincial authorities: the president and vice president of the Provincial Defense Council, Yoel Queipo and Manuel Hernández, respectively.
Wednesday night, on the television program Mesa Redonda, Díaz-Canel reaffirmed the government’s full support for the provinces affected by Hurricane Melissa and urged everyone to remain vigilant.
He also acknowledged the efforts deployed to protect the population and emphasized that the absence of human casualties in the eastern part of the country is a result of the “participation, organization, and adherence to the guidelines” of the Civil Defense system.
However, he warned that risks persist due to the secondary effects of the storm, such as lingering winds, soil saturation, river flooding, bridge collapses, disruption of basic services, and potential outbreaks of disease due to water source contamination.
