Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked Mexico for sending more than 814 tons of humanitarian aid, amid the tightening of the US blockade against the Caribbean nation.
Díaz-Canel expressed his deep gratitude, highlighting the warmth and historical affection that unites both nations. The Cuban president appreciated Mexico’s support at a time when intensifying external pressures are seeking to strangle the island’s economy.
The Cuban leader emphasized that this solidarity comes in a critical context of shortages, reaffirming that Mexican support represents significant relief for Cuban families enduring the impact of coercive measures.
On his Twitter account, the president expressed: “Thank you, #Mexico. For the solidarity, the affection, the always warm embrace of #Cuba.”
On Sunday, the ships Papaloapan and Isla Holbox set sail from the port of Veracruz, carrying aid that “will help alleviate the consequences of the cruel economic war against Cuba,” the ambassador said.
In a statement, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed that the Papaloapan is transporting essential food items, including liquid milk, meat products, cookies, beans, rice, canned tuna in water, sardines, and vegetable oil, as well as personal hygiene products, with a cargo of approximately 536 tons.
The Isla Holbox, meanwhile, is carrying just over 277 tons of powdered milk.
The Ministry announced that the ships are expected to arrive at their destination in four days, and that more than 1,500 tons of powdered milk and beans remain to be shipped.
“Cuba and Mexico are sister nations, heirs to a long history of solidarity that we honor today,” the statement emphasized, confirming compliance with “President Claudia Sheinbaum’s instructions.”
