Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez expressed his support for Colombian President Gustavo Petro on his social media account this Monday following Donald Trump’s statements and insults, as well as the bilateral and regional tensions he has caused in recent weeks.
“We reject the interference and fallacies of the U.S. government, which is attempting to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine in its relations with the sovereign nations of Latin America and the Caribbean,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared in his statement.
The Cuban president emphasized the support of the nations of “Our America” for the president and the Colombian people. “We reject the interference and fallacies of the US government, which is attempting to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine in its relations with the sovereign nations of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he declared in his post.
From the Caribbean nation, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla also expressed his support for President Petro on the social media platform X. The Cuban foreign minister stated that “The statements of the US government constitute a threat to Colombian sovereignty and seek to interfere in the internal affairs of that sister nation.”
Tensions between the two presidents have increased due to Trump’s provocations with his aggressions in the Caribbean Sea and the statements he has made in recent weeks about drug trafficking, naming Presidents Gustavo Petro and Nicolás Maduro as prime suspects.
Gustavo Petro has criticized Trump’s positions, the US assassinations in Caribbean waters, and the false accusations he has made about Colombia and its links to drug trafficking.
The Cuban nation has expressed its unconditional support amid these tensions in the Americas, first with the Venezuelan nation, holding a mobilization that brought together more than 50,000 Cubans in support of Venezuela and collected 4,300,000 signatures, and now with the people of Colombia.
President Trump’s statements against President Petro are being labeled as offensive by various sectors of the country. “Mr. Trump, Colombia has never been rude to the United States; on the contrary, it has deeply loved its culture. But you are rude and ignorant toward Colombia. Read, as your chargé d’affaires in Colombia did, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and I assure you that you will learn something from solitude,” Gustavo Petro asserted in a post on the social media platform X.
