Cuban Rugby Receives Donation from the United Kingdom

by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, September 2 (RHC) – Today, the Cuban Rugby Federation received a significant donation of sports equipment at the capital’s Ciudad Deportiva.

The delivery was made by James Hooley, British Ambassador to Cuba, and Claire Caruth, Second Secretary for Economic, Political, and Project Affairs at the embassy.

The donation comes from the British NGO SOS Kit Aid and includes shirts, shorts, socks, sneakers, sports boots, training bibs, impact bags, equipment bags, and balls.

The equipment comes from schools, clubs, and specialized manufacturers across the United Kingdom, ranging from small school teams to the UK national team.

SOS Kit Aid has been distributing new and used rugby equipment to young people around the world for 20 years. We are delighted that Cuba is now joining this solidarity network. I hope this donation will have a positive impact on Cuban communities.

Strengthening ties between Cuba and the United Kingdom through culture and sports is the main objective of events like the one staged this Thursday.

We seek to strengthen the bond between both nations in this way. This donation is an act of friendship.

The diplomat also emphasized the importance of recycling as a means of sustainability in hosting events of this kind.

Rugby in Cuba began its official practice in 2002 and is governed methodologically by the Recreation Department of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER, by its Spanish initials).

On the island, there are teams of all ages, including women, although there are aspirations to expand women’s participation in sports.
