Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations denounces aggression against Iran

by Ed Newman

Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, denounced on Monday at the 61st session of the Human Rights Council the attacks perpetrated by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which he described as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cubaminrex, the Cuban diplomat called for an immediate halt to the aggression, which has caused civilian casualties, including children, and advocated for preserving the principle of good neighborliness between Iran and the Arab States in this context.

Benítez Verson affirmed that the international community must mobilize urgently to defend the Charter of the United Nations and International Law, in the face of what he considered a global dictatorship exercised with impunity.

In his remarks, he also condemned the escalation of coercive measures by the United States against Cuba, which include a de facto energy blockade intended to provoke a humanitarian catastrophe.

He stated that these measures constitute an illegal and criminal collective punishment against the Cuban people, and recalled the words of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who stated in his report that “nothing can justify the suffocation of a population.”

The ambassador assured that, even in the worst-case scenario, Cuba will persist in defending its sovereignty and independence, and will protect the most vulnerable sectors, such as children and the elderly, maintaining its commitment to the promotion of all human rights.
