Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power condemns illegal U.S. naval blockade against Venezuela

by Ed Newman

In a statement issued this Thursday, Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament) described the attack on an oil tanker on December 10th as “piracy and maritime terrorism” and rejected the proposed naval blockade in the Caribbean, stating that these actions violate International Law and threaten the stability of the entire region.

The Cuban deputies expressed their absolute rejection of the military assault perpetrated by US forces against an oil tanker in international waters of the Caribbean Sea. or the Cuban legislature, this act of force not only threatens the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, but also constitutes a grave violation of sovereignty and freedom of navigation, fundamental principles of coexistence among nations.

The parliament also denounced the imposition of a naval blockade that seeks to stifle Venezuela’s hydrocarbon trade. According to the statement, this measure violates the Charter of the United Nations and sets a negative precedent for international trade. Cuba warned that the US military deployment in the Caribbean is “disproportionate and unjustified,” jeopardizing the peace achieved by the peoples of Latin America.

The National Assembly of People’s Power emphasized that these actions flagrantly violate the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Furthermore, they specified that by seizing ships and stealing cargo, Washington is revealing its true objective: to take control of Venezuelan natural resources.

The Cuban parliament linked this aggression to the continued application of the Monroe Doctrine and the so-called “Trump Corollary” in U.S. security strategy.

The statement recalled that Latin America and the Caribbean were proclaimed a “Zone of Peace” during the CELAC summit in Havana in 2014. The legislature emphasized that this proclamation is an obligation for all governments and must be respected to avoid larger conflicts. The use of force in the Caribbean is seen by Cuba as a step backward to the darkest times of imperialist interventionism.

Given this situation, the Cuban parliamentarians made an urgent appeal to the peoples and assemblies of the world to firmly condemn the Bolivarian aggression. The international community’s duty, according to the declaration, is to mobilize in repudiation of these practices of “modern piracy” that the White House is attempting to normalize as tools of political and economic pressure.

Finally, the declaration reaffirmed Cuba’s unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan government and people in their defense of sovereignty. Parliament urged an end to the “criminal intentions” of the U.S. administration, calling for “the unity of Our America to preserve security and stability in the face of external threats.”
