Dominican Republic: U.S. declares Summit of the Americas suspended

by Ed Newman

The Jesús Adón Popular Bloc celebrated the suspension of the Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic, considering it a continuation of the interventionist and aggressive policies of the United States government.

The bloc considered the postponement of the meeting until next year – without a date yet set – a first and significant defeat for this interventionist agenda.

The decision to postpone the meeting comes after several countries refused to participate, motivated by the undemocratic exclusion of sovereign nations such as Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, the bloc noted.

It maintained that key countries in the region, such as Mexico and Colombia, had already publicly announced their decision not to attend.

“This firm stance is based on the rejection of interference by the United States and its lackeys in the internal politics of countries that have opted for a sovereign orientation, distinct from the interests of U.S. imperialism,” the Bloc, comprised of several social organizations from the Dominican Republic, stated.

It asserted that the so-called “Trumpism” faces growing rejection of its warmongering policies, such as those it maintains in the waters of the Caribbean, a region declared by Latin America as a Zone of Peace.

The Jesús Adón Popular Bloc reiterated its commitment to the self-determination of peoples and respect for national sovereignty and reaffirmed its determination to continue denouncing any attempt at imperialist intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Previously, the Communist Party of Labor and the Broad Front described the postponement of the Summit of the Americas, scheduled for December 4 and 5 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, as a political defeat for the Dominican government and the United States.

The administration of Luis Abinader postponed the event due to regional disagreements that hinder dialogue, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement explained that, in 2022, when the Dominican government assumed responsibility for hosting the Summit of the Americas, “the profound disagreements that currently hinder productive dialogue in the Americas were unforeseeable.”

Just over a month ago, the Dominican government announced that it would not invite Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to the Summit of the Americas.
