Esteban Lazo, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba (Parliament), participated on Tuesday in the main commemoration ceremony for the 50th anniversary of Angola’s national independence, held in Republic Square in Luanda.

The Cuban Parliament shared images of the commemorative event, which was attended by high-level representatives from approximately 20 countries, via Twitter.

As part of his current official visit to Angola, Lazo was received this Monday by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, to whom he delivered letters from Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

In the messages, the Cuban leaders conveyed their congratulations to the Angolan people and their principal authorities on the 50th anniversary of their national independence and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Angola.

Lazo thanked the Angolan head of state for the decoration conferred on November 6th upon the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, with the Medal for the 50th Anniversary of National Independence in its highest class, “Honor,” and for his recognition of the Cuban people’s contribution to the nation’s independence struggle and the end of apartheid.

He highlighted Angola’s support, during the High-Level Segment of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, for demanding the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, and for Cuba’s removal from the spurious list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.

The president of the Cuban legislature held a fruitful meeting with Cuban collaborators in that African nation, whom he described as worthy successors to Angola’s epic struggle, heirs to internationalism as a vibrant and daily practice.

He acknowledged the support of the Cuban brigades in Angola’s reconstruction efforts in essential areas such as health and education, for the benefit of the people. “Their effort is our greatest pride and confirmation that, together, Cuba and Angola remain invincible,” Lazo stated.

As part of his working visit, the president of the National Assembly met with members of organizations in solidarity with Cuba and Cubans residing in that African nation, where he arrived this Sunday.

The Cuban delegation in Angola includes Heroes of the Republic of Cuba: Army Corps General Joaquín Quintas Solá, Vice Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, and Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra; Luis Alberto Amorós, Director of Sub-Saharan Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Alberto Núñez Betancourt, president of the Parliament’s International Relations Committee, among other officials.
