Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez affirms Cuba advances in assembling energy storage system

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted today that the investment in energy storage equipment is part of the Government Plan for the Recovery of the National Electrical System.

Through the X social network, the Minister responded to a post by the Electric Union (UNE) announcing the start of the assembly of the first battery container for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the town of Cueto, Holguín province.

This investment will offer greater stability and sovereignty to the national electrical system, the Minister emphasized, adding that they continue working diligently for the well-being of the people.

The project, being carried out in conjunction with the Military Construction Union (UCM), represents the concrete realization of one of the most anticipated projects to address the energy crisis affecting the country.

BESS systems allow for the storage of surplus energy generated during periods of low demand, releasing it during periods of high consumption or when there are generation interruptions, smoothing out fluctuations and improving the reliability of the entire grid.

This advancement in Cueto is part of a broader plan that includes the installation of several similar systems at key locations throughout the country.

Investment in energy storage technology is seen as a fundamental component for increasing the resilience of the system, more efficiently integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, and moving towards greater energy sovereignty, reducing vulnerability to failures in thermoelectric power plants.
