Fourth humanitarian aid ship arrives to Cuba from Mexico

The logistics support ship Huasteco, which departed from the port of Veracruz, arrived in Havana this Friday with more than 96 tons of humanitarian aid, including various food supplies, primarily beans and rice, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

According to the Foreign Ministry, this fourth shipment brings the total humanitarian aid sent to the Cuban people by the Mexican government to 3,125 tons. This aid was delivered with the participation of the governments of Mexico City (CDMX) and Puebla, as well as social organizations. The Mexican government also supported the flotillas that departed from Mexico as part of the Nuestra América international humanitarian convoy.

The Nuestra América convoy departed from southeastern Mexico last weekend and its lead vessel arrived in Cuba last Tuesday.

Last Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed that her government will continue sending humanitarian aid to Cuba and urged organizations such as the UN to do the same, given the worsening crisis on the Caribbean island caused by the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade, which was reinforced in late January by the oil embargo imposed by Donald Trump.

News outlets have also reported on supplies that were “collected by civil society, Cubans residing in Mexico, and an initiative of the newspaper La Jornada” for shipment to the island as a gesture of solidarity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Mexico’s international aid policy reflects a long tradition of solidarity with other nations in times of emergency.

It noted that in recent months the country has also sent assistance to various regions affected by disasters, including areas impacted by wildfires in California, USA, and Chile, as well as floods in Texas and other natural disasters across the continent.
