From Summit to Abyss of the Americas

A Summit of the Americas without three of the countries of this geographic region, due to the will of the continent’s bully, is neither a summit nor a Summit of the Americas.

What the real organizers, who are obviously not the Dominican hosts, want is for the December 4-5 meeting in the resort of Punta Cana to conform to the hegemonic codes of an imperial monologue, with the rest of the guests acting as an audience, with little voice and complacent votes.

To avoid political indigestion at the beach banquet, they excluded Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Those three uncomfortable ones: out! They believe that with this arrogant decision they will silence the people.

In times of a counteroffensive by the most conservative, subjugating, and neo-colonizing forces that are disputing ideological meanings on the continent, it was to be expected that Washington would dictate, without equivocation or diplomatic cover-up, the rules of the banquet.

Since the public announcement that the irreverent trio would not be at the same table as Monroe’s heirs, there have been voices of protest, and a woman whose stature is measured by the dignity of her actions has said: I’m not going.

It is the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, whose leadership grows and inspires. Without her, too, the Summit could be written, with apologies to the academic norms of language, in lowercase.

The White House (or rather, the Black House, given her aggressive and warlike behavior) must have been displeased that Claudia declined to participate in such a spectacle.

And they know, despite the superb pressure to ensure a quorum at the time of applause and genuflections, that there may be more empty lounge chairs, due to the need to organize the meeting on the shores of the luxurious Caribbean beach. Or that someone will come to the defense of those absent.

Even with the exclusions of the three heavyweights in the ring of regional debates, Washington has not been able to construct a consensus text. They say the draft comes and goes, with subtle additions from one side and colossal deletions from the other.

The blackmail increases. Sign or sign. Accept or accept. Obey or obey. These are the terms spoken by the lords of the empire, who brook no further dissent in what they consider their fiefdom, nothing more than a neighborhood of equals.

Threatening bells ring to intimidate the people south of the Rio Grande. They deploy military and media gunboats. They incessantly fire shells of lies to kill the truth, and once it is dying, they then turn their attention to the governments that refuse to accept hegemonic power.

The self-proclaimed leaders of the world believe they can take down ideological adversaries, as if they were playing bowling.

It is known that this meeting will contribute little to the most urgent challenges facing the peoples of the Americas, including the minorities who today live in perpetual agony within the United States, as a consequence of the xenophobic and exclusionary policies of Trump and his acolytes.

It is also known that they intend to stage a symbolic splash of applause and hollow speeches, prioritizing photo ops over debates, amplified by a narrative focused on the “happy” faces of those who will actually be suffering the humiliations of the lord of hell.

Cuba faces greater challenges than it should waste time in this conclave arranged by Mr. Power, and so do Venezuela and Nicaragua, three peoples determined to build their destiny without northern dictates.

However, leaving these three nations out of the meeting confirms that the most appropriate name for the Punta Cana meeting would be the Abyss of the Americas.

The authors of such a position only confirm their fear of counter-hegemonic ideas. They would not know how to respond to the forceful criticisms of the leaders of those peoples, whose truths would hit the fragile chins of those who call themselves powerful and are nothing more than weak-minded people entrenched in their military and economic arsenal.

So what will happen in Punta Cana on December 4 and 5? Clubs and circuses in abundance. But nothing of the Summit. And even less of the Americas.
