Havana, November 17 (RHC) – Germany’s national football team, playing at the Red Bull Arena, thrashed Slovakia 6-0 today and secured their direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
With this result, the Germans finished top of Group A in the European qualifiers with 15 points, the product of five wins and only one loss, which they suffered in the first leg against their opponents in this match.
The revenge of Julian Nagelsmann’s men began in the 18th minute, when Nick Woltemade headed the ball into the back of the net, and continued with goals from Serge Gnabry and two from Leroy Sané, giving them a comfortable lead at halftime.
After the break, the four-time world champions continued the scoring spree with a shot from Ridle Baku—from a Gnabry pass—that found the back of the net, and another from Assan Ouédraogo that completed the rout.
Slovakia, with 12 points, finished second in the group and will have to seek its place in the playoffs. On Monday, Northern Ireland finished third with nine points after defeating Luxembourg 1-0, who left with six losses.
In Group G, the Netherlands also secured its presence at the World Cup by beating Lithuania 4-0, and Poland finished second after defeating Malta 3-2.
Finally, Croatia, already qualified, beat Montenegro 3-2 in a Group L match, and the Czech Republic defeated Gibraltar 6-0 to secure second place.
