Grenada launches massive solidarity campaign with Cuba against Washington’s blockade

by Ed Newman

The people of Grenada announced on April 9, through national television, the launch of an ambitious large-scale solidarity initiative with Cuba.

The campaign, which will run from April 14th to May 14th, seeks to mobilize resources and funds to support Cuba in the face of the tightening of the economic blockade imposed by the United States.

The start of this campaign coincides with a historic date: the 47th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations, sealed on April 14, 1979. This symbolism reinforces the bonds of brotherhood that have united the two Caribbean peoples for almost five decades.

Total Mobilization of Grenadian Society

The campaign aims to raise funds and critical supplies in the areas of health and energy, sectors severely impacted by Washington’s sanctions.

According to Dr. Malachy Dottin, president of the Grenadian Graduates Committee in Cuba and one of the main organizers, unions, churches, farmers, fishermen, artists, businesspeople, and community organizations are all being called upon to participate.

Among the planned activities are solidarity breakfasts and dinners, concerts, and targeted collections throughout the country to facilitate citizen contributions.

The initiative is seen as a gesture of gratitude toward the socialist island. For decades, Cuba has provided invaluable assistance to Grenada in health, education, and infrastructure. A prime example of this cooperation is the construction of the Maurice Bishop International Airport, a fundamental project for the development of the Grenadian nation.

Representatives of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Grenada emphasized that this mobilization comes at a crucial moment, as Cuba faces the cumulative effects of more than 60 years of economic blockade.

With this event, Granada joins the global voices demanding an end to unilateral coercive measures and advocates for regional cooperation based on dignity and mutual support.
