Colombian President Gustavo Petro met with Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés, who is in Santa Marta to participate in the IV Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union.

The meeting was described as a fraternal exchange in which both parties reaffirmed their mutual support and solidarity, according to Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Anayansi Rodríguez, who is also part of the delegation participating in the event at the Santamar Convention Center in Santa Marta.

Over the weekend, the vice president met with members of the Colombian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MCSC), as well as with members of other groups and friendly figures.

The dignitary conveyed the gratitude of his people and government for the expressions of affection shown from the South American territory.

The meeting, held at the Los Trupillos resort, was attended by senators from the Common Party, representatives of the progressive coalition Historical Pact, union leaders, and more than one hundred activists in solidarity with the island.

Valdés reaffirmed that his country remains committed to supporting Colombia in its efforts to achieve peace.

“You can always count on Cuba, on our support,” he stated.

Later, he spoke with a group of Cuban nationals residing in Colombia, reiterating the Cuban government’s commitment to strengthening ties with its community abroad.

“The majority of Cubans abroad oppose the sanctions that affect their families. The majority also maintain ties with the country and are willing to contribute to its development,” he emphasized during the meeting.

The vice president was accompanied by Deputy Minister Rodríguez and the Cuban Ambassador to Colombia, Javier Caamaño.

Other officials from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present.

The 4th CELAC-European Union Summit, which is being held in Colombia, has as its main objectives strengthening bi-regional cooperation and addressing common global challenges between the two blocs.
