The “Nuestra America” / “Our America” coalition of international movements announced that its humanitarian aid initiative for Cuba will transform into a massive deployment by air, sea, and land. The goal is to deliver food, medicine, and essential goods on March 21st to the Malecón in Havana. This mobilization seeks to break the economic blockade that is suffocating the island, integrating unions, members of parliament, and humanitarian organizations into a global logistics network for collecting supplies.
Prominent international figures such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib have expressed their full support for the mission. Thunberg denounced Washington’s actions as a “brutal act of collective punishment” against the Cuban people and emphasized the need for solidarity in the face of imperialist policies.
The initiative is inspired by the Sumud Flotilla, which attempted to deliver aid to Gaza and break the Israeli blockade, linking both struggles against the military and economic sieges that affect civilian populations.
The situation in Cuba is considered the most critical in nearly seven decades due to the intensification of the US blockade. The Trump administration intensified sanctions against countries that supply oil to the island, exacerbating the energy crisis following the US military intervention in Venezuela. This blockade of crude oil and gasoline from Caracas has left Cuba without one of its main strategic allies, severely impacting the quality of life of its inhabitants.
Faced with a critical fuel shortage, the Cuban government has been forced to implement an emergency plan that reduces healthcare and transportation services to a minimum. The United Nations (UN) recently expressed its concern about the impact of this shortage on the population and confirmed that it is working with Cuban authorities to provide support in the face of the scarcity. Severe rationing is already affecting key sectors such as education and production, deepening the shortages in the domestic market.
The organizers of “Nuestra America” / “Our America” emphasize that international solidarity is the only tool capable of confronting unilateral sanctions that violate international law. By unifying efforts through various means, the convoy aims to mitigate the impact of the economic siege that seeks to undermine the sovereignty of the Caribbean nation. Delegations from various countries are already coordinating collection points to ensure that the cargo reaches its destination on the scheduled date in March.
This humanitarian effort underscores the urgent need to lift the coercive measures that impede the normal flow of vital supplies to the island. While Washington maintains its policy of hostility, social movements around the world reaffirm their commitment to the self-determination of the Cuban people. The convoy’s arrival in Havana will represent an act of collective resistance against the blockade and a defense of the human right to health and food.
