A delegation from the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA), meeting at the Fidel Castro Ruz Center in Havana, expressed its unconditional support for Cuba in the face of the hostility of the US administration.
Joao Pedro Stedile, representative of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) of Brazil, emphasized the need to intensify global solidarity to counter the offensive by the Donald Trump administration, which he described as an attempt to economically strangle the island and a threat to world peace through its war plans.
For his part, the president of the Socialist Party of Zambia, Fred M’membe, denounced the intensification of the imperialist siege in all social and economic sectors, while emphasizing that a population like Cuba’s does not deserve the encirclement it suffers at the hands of imperialism.
M’membe stressed that the only danger Cuba represents is its example of kindness and solidarity, and announced that African nations will share their resources with the archipelago in gratitude for Cuban support in the liberation struggles of the last century.
From the United States itself, Brian Becker, leader of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSDL), stated that Trump’s recent actions are an extension of the economic war against a sovereign nation that does not yield to external influences.
Becker clarified that American citizens do not support the interventionist plans or armed conflicts promoted by their own government, thus separating the will of the people from the policies of the White House.
Finally, the delegation reported that its visit has the technical objective of further analyzing the impacts caused by the blockade in order to facilitate humanitarian aid. In this regard, they announced that donations intended to support sectors such as health and agriculture will arrive soon, while they continue their schedule of meetings with local authorities to seek solutions that ensure the well-being of the population.
On January 29, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency, citing Cuba as a supposed threat to U.S. national security. The measure empowers Washington to impose tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to the island, leading to a severe fuel shortage in Cuba.
The rationale and the measure itself have been rejected by various world leaders and organizations, including the United Nations. Furthermore, in response to the intensification of the U.S. embargo against the island, which has been in place for over 60 years, organizations and citizens from numerous countries are mobilizing in support of the Cuban people.
These acts of solidarity are manifested through public statements and the shipment of essential supplies to the island to mitigate the impact of a blockade that severely affects the daily lives of the Cuban people.
