Mexican Communists express solidarity with Cuba

by Ed Newman

With shouts of “Long live sovereign Cuba,” hundreds of demonstrators expressed their support for the Caribbean island and condemned the policies of harassment undertaken by the United States government against the Cuban people.

“Our position is one of solidarity.  We have organized a defense committee for Cuba here in Mexico… defending the Cuban Revolution is also defending ourselves,” Fernando Acosta Esquivel, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Mexico, told Prensa Latina in an exclusive interview.

The event, held Sunday night on Boulevard Morelos in downtown Monterrey, was organized by Mexican communists, members of the regional committee of the Mexican solidarity movement with Cuba in the states of Nuevo León and Coahuila, the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers, and the National Association of Democratic Lawyers of the state of Nuevo León.

“We are witnessing the danger posed by (US President) Donald Trump, who doesn’t even obey the rules of his own country, which has provoked a resistance movement against him within his own nation. That’s why we believe the struggle is not only about what he is doing to Cuba, but also about the international threat Trump poses to peace,” Acosta Esquivel added.

The Mexican communist leader further stated that the Mexican people will not allow the White House to militarily invade Cuba, nor—he emphasized—will they allow it in Mexico. “We don’t deny that they might try, but the problem will be the response our people will give to any aggression.”

Among other speakers, Petra Romero Gómez, a federal deputy for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, denounced the suffering endured by the Cuban people.

The Mexican government, headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has sent more than 3,125 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba in four maritime shipments so far in 2026, including food and hygiene supplies, intended to alleviate the crisis in which the Cuban economy is mired as a result of the sanctions imposed by Washington.
