Mexico reaffirms solidarity with Cuba in the face of the U.S. blockade

by Ed Newman

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed on Monday, March 2nd, her government’s unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and well-being of the Caribbean nation, confirming that humanitarian aid to the island will continue steadily.

During her regular morning press conference, the president highlighted the arrival of a second shipment of essential supplies, emphasizing that these actions are part of a foreign policy of brotherhood and mutual support among the peoples of Latin America in the face of external pressures that are strangling the Cuban economy.

This shipment adds to the 814 tons delivered on February 12, strengthening a bridge of solidarity that defies the tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States for more than six decades, which Mexico has repeatedly denounced as a violation of the human rights of the Cuban people.

The president explained that this shipment includes 23 tons of aid collected by social organizations and the Mexico City government at community collection centers, demonstrating that support for the island is a sentiment shared by Mexican society. With this delivery, Mexico is not only providing essential goods and hygiene products, but also sending a powerful message to the world about the importance of regional integration and resistance to unilateral coercive measures, always prioritizing social responsibility and shared transformation.

In recent days, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Josefina Vidal, confirmed that on February 28, the Mexican Navy ships Papaloapan and Huasteco entered Havana Bay, carrying more than 1,000 tons of humanitarian aid. Through her social media accounts, the diplomat welcomed the arrival of these vessels as a gesture of profound solidarity from the government of Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexican people.

These actions come at a critical time for Cuba, which is besieged by the tightening of the economic embargo and energy persecution illegally imposed by the United States government. The cargo transported by the ARM Papaloapan consisted of 1,078 tons of beans and powdered milk, essential food items for the Cuban population.

This delivery reinforces the historical ties between the two nations and further consolidates a humanitarian bridge that defies the policies of hostility and financial strangulation that Washington applies against the island’s sovereignty.  The Mexican Foreign Ministry emphasized that the country maintains its tradition of supporting the sister nations of Latin America and the Caribbean facing complex situations.

Mexico has reiterated in various international forums its absolute rejection of any measure that violates the self-determination of peoples, positioning itself as a strategic ally of Cuba in the search for solutions to its food and energy challenges. With the arrival of these supplies, it is reaffirmed that regional integration and social commitment are fundamental pillars for the transformation and unity of sovereign peoples.
