Mexico to celebrate Cuban Film Week with screenings of classics

by Ed Newman

A Cuban Film Week will take place in Mexico beginning January 30. The Cineteca Nacional de México (Mexico’s National Film Archive), the Cuban Embassy, and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) are finalizing details for the event.

As a prelude to the series, the feature film Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) was screened at the Cineteca Nacional on November 11, along with a selection of Cuban film posters from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Memory of the World collection.

Also, on the 17th, when the Mexican institution celebrates its 52nd anniversary, the feature film Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, will be screened.

“The relationship between Cuba and Mexico in the field of culture is extensive, and this will be a wonderful space and a demonstration of the enduring solidarity between our film industries,” added Rodríguez.

While the number and other titles of the films selected for the event have not yet been revealed, the official stated that they will be classics from the revolutionary era, curated by the director of the Cuban Film Archive, Luciano Castillo.

ICAIC considers the Mexican Film Archive a fundamental pillar in the preservation and dissemination of national and international film heritage.

The Cuban Film Week is one of several cooperation projects between the two countries, which also include the delivery of the feature film *El hombre de Maisinicú* (1973) for restoration and the signing of an agreement between the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños and Churubusco Studios.
