Roberto Morales Ojeda, a member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, reaffirmed via his Facebook profile that “the defense of Cuba is a vital matter.”
The leader recalled a quote by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, delivered in 1990 before a group of Brazilian intellectuals, in which he warned that the fall of the “Cuban trench” would not be an isolated event, but rather a continental tragedy.
Morales Ojeda underscored that, according to Fidel, the defense of Cuba is inseparable from the cause of Latin America and the Caribbean, as its defeat would pave the way for unchecked hegemonic domination in the region.
He noted that, in the present day, interventionist doctrines are resurfacing, and attempts are being made to erode the sovereign identity of nations through economic pressures, smear campaigns, and media-driven attacks against progressive governments.
The Secretary of Organization highlighted that “defending Cuba means defending the capacity for resistance of the peoples of the Global South,” thereby preserving a symbol of dignity, independence, and social justice in the face of external assaults.
Morales Ojeda emphasized that the fate of Latin American peoples is intertwined, and that events in Cuba have a direct impact on the political equilibrium and the hopes for transformation across the continent.
He concluded that defending Cuba today constitutes an active trench in the battle for the second — and definitive — independence of Latin America.
