The Central Bank of Cuba informs the public that, following the update of the country’s currency system, two new denominations (2,000 and 5,000 Cuban pesos) are being introduced.
The bank is also continuing to study the structure of the currency system under the current circumstances, according to a statement published Tuesday on the institution’s website.
The first 5,000 Cuban peso banknotes will begin circulating in Havana tomorrow, Wednesday, and will be gradually rolled out throughout the country. The same will apply to the 2,000 Cuban peso banknote, and further information will be provided in due course.
The issuance of the new banknotes aims to facilitate cash transactions, respond to the real needs of an economy that demands large amounts of cash, reduce cash logistics costs, and improve operational efficiency during the current period of inflation the country is experiencing.
According to the Central Bank of Cuba (BCC), the new family of Cuban banknotes changes its traditional design, incorporating the use of 100% of its surface area and new security features.
For the first time in the history of Cuban numismatics, these two new banknotes will feature the images of Cuban patriots. The 2,000 CUP note depicts Mariana Grajales Coello, Mother of the Nation, and the 5,000 CUP note features Celia Sánchez Manduley, Heroine of the Sierra Maestra.
Both banknotes have the following characteristics:
– The paper used in their production is special security paper for banknotes, with characteristics in accordance with international standards, while maintaining its dimensions of 150 by 70 millimeters.
– The predominant colors on the 2,000-peso note are violet and pink; for the 5,000-peso note, it is blue.
– A watermark with the image of the patriot is included, along with an electrotype indicating the denomination of the note.
– Embedded vertically on the right side of the banknote is a security thread with a movement effect. On the obverse, the initials BCC and the denomination number will be visible.
– Both the obverse and reverse will feature the Cuban national flower, the butterfly, as a new security element. It will have a rainbow movement effect when viewed from different angles.
– The image of the patriot will be located in the center of the obverse. It will be printed in high relief.
– The legend “Banco Central de Cuba” will be located in the upper left corner. The Bank’s logo and the denomination in letters will appear in the lower right corner. A high-relief element, created using colorless printing, will be displayed on the front, visible and tactile.
– In the upper right corner, below the denomination, there will be identifying features for the visually impaired.
– The initials BCC, for the Central Bank of Cuba, will appear at the top center of both banknotes, followed by the signature of the Bank’s president.
– On the reverse side, the phrase “REPUBLIC OF CUBA” will be displayed in the center. In the center of the reverse is an image of a memorial site. The 2,000 CUP note depicts the monument to the Mother of the Nation in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, while the 5,000 CUP note depicts the Celia Sánchez Manduley Memorial in Lenin Park.
– The denomination will be written out in words at the bottom center of both banknotes.
– In the upper left corner, below the denomination, and in the lower right corner, above the denomination, the banknote series will appear, consisting of three letters and a two-digit number.
– In the upper left and right corners of the banknote, the banknote’s serial number, consisting of six digits, will appear.
