Ninth Cuban Communist Party Congress — scheduled for April 2026 — postponed

by Ed Newman

The top leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) agreed on Saturday to postpone its next congress, which had been scheduled for April 2026.

The decision, made public late Saturday night, was reached by the members of the Central Committee, meeting this Saturday in its 11th Plenum, following a proposal by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro.

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, announced the decision in a letter read before the Plenum, which had been previously reviewed in a meeting of the Political Bureau.

Raúl Castro acknowledges the president’s position in defending and demanding compliance with what we have indicated: that Party congresses should not be postponed and therefore must be held within the established timeframe, every five years, except in cases of force majeure.

However, the Army General warns, based on the principle of always doing what is best for the Revolution, he believes it is advisable to postpone the Ninth Congress.

The text indicates that this is about dedicating all the country’s resources, and the effort and energy of the Party, Government, and State cadres, to resolving current problems, and dedicating 2026 to recovering as much as possible.

He clarifies that this cannot be seen as a setback; it is a necessary and timely decision that will allow for the unification of forces, improve the nation’s situation, and create conditions for a better and more fruitful Congress, “which will consolidate, as our Constitution affirms, the construction of socialism and the advance towards communist society.”
