An attack on Venezuela is an attack on the entire continent, on the sovereignty and self-determination of its peoples, warned Argentine Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel.
In a statement from the Service for Peace and Justice (SERPAJ), which he directs, Pérez Esquivel condemns that “Donald Trump’s constant threat to Venezuela to seize its oil, assets, and resources is based on lies and the complicit silence of European countries and international organizations such as the UN, the OAS, the European Parliament and the United States Congress.”
With such a policy of fierce hostility, Washington is endangering all of Latin America.
Trump, acting like a “great dictator,” disregards international law, treaties, protocols, and the UN Declaration of Human Rights, which he systematically violates. The SERPAJ statement, signed by Pérez Esquivel, maintains that the United States government “has maintained a criminal blockade against Cuba for more than 60 years, threatens Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, and Nicaragua, and interferes in electoral processes, as in the fraudulent elections in Honduras.”
Washington showed “its bloodiest face by imposing military dictatorships throughout the continent, in a long history of interventions to maintain its hegemonic power in the world,” it recalls.
“Today, that power is in dispute with other powers, and therefore it seeks to secure its interests in the Latin American region,” SERPAJ points out.
The blockade against Cuba, the attempts at invasion and destabilization, the arrogance of its militaries, and the threats to all the countries of the region are examples of this global dictatorship, Pérez Esquivel emphasizes.
“One only needs to look at the global landscape to worry about where they want to drag humanity: with the increase in armed conflicts and the displacement and expulsion of migrants,” he adds.
“Europe has lost its voice and its capacity to decide; it is colonized and subjugated by the United States and NATO, which impose policies of confrontation instead of cooperation. The consequences are alarming, such as the return to nuclear testing, which generates greater global uncertainty.”
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate denounces Trump for imposing his policy of domination, disregarding international law and acting like piracy, as with the hijacking of a Venezuelan oil tanker.
“The whereabouts of the ship and the fate of its kidnapped crew members are unknown. We demand their immediate release,” SERPAJ demands.
The statement recalls that the people of the United States have historically provided great examples of resistance: they demonstrated their defiance during the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights movements with Martin Luther King Jr. and the hippie movement awakened the collective consciousness.
The churches also played a fundamental role in demanding an end to the war of aggression against Vietnam and respect for human rights, the statement by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel concludes.
