Petro laments regional silence on U.S. aggression in the Caribbean

by Ed Newman

Colombian President Gustavo Petro lamented this Friday that Latin American and Caribbean governments have not spoken out against the US attacks on vessels in the Caribbean and the Pacific, after the United Nations accused the Donald Trump administration of “violating international law” through these operations.

“The UN is repeating what I have said: the attacks in the Caribbean violate international humanitarian law. How sad that Latin America and the Caribbean remain silent. Integration cannot be mere rhetoric. One hundred years of solitude, and yet, we will resist,” President Petro stated on social media.

In this regard, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated this Friday that the people aboard the boats were victims of “extrajudicial executions” and that such actions must cease “regardless of the alleged crimes they are accused of.”

“These attacks, and their growing human cost, are unacceptable. The United States must put an end to them,” Türk stated, noting that more than 57 people have been killed in these attacks perpetrated by the US Armed Forces.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated this Friday that the United States’ military attacks against vessels in the Caribbean Sea violate international law.

Under the fake guise of combating drug trafficking, the Trump administration has deployed three destroyers, an amphibious assault ship, a guided-missile cruiser, a nuclear submarine, and some 4,500 marines to the Caribbean Sea since August.

President Nicolás Maduro has reiterated that Venezuela is the victim of “a multifaceted war orchestrated by the United States,” with the objective of imposing “regime change and a puppet government.”

In response to threats emanating from Washington, the Greater Caribbean Parliamentary Meeting for Peace opened this Friday in Caracas. This forum brought together legislators from more than a dozen countries with the aim of forging a common response to the United States’ military aggression and reaffirming the defense of Caribbean sovereignty.

Similarly, the Venezuelan people have spoken out in defense of Venezuela’s sovereignty and self-determination, and have emphasized the importance of preserving peace in the Caribbean region.
