by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, November 16 (RHC) – Today, with a resounding 9-1 victory over Armenia, Portugal secured their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Renato Veiga (7th minute), Gonçalo Ramos (28th), João Neves (30th, 41st, and 81st), Bruno Fernandes (45+3, penalty; 51st and 72nd, penalty), and Francisco Conceição (90+2) scored the goals in a match where Cristiano Ronaldo did not play after being sent off for violent conduct in the previous game.

With this victory, Portugal finished top of Group F with 12 points, ahead of Ireland, who had 10.

Ireland lost to Hungary, but the Hungarians, having learned from Portugal’s resounding victory, eased off and ended up losing 2-3. Therefore, it will be the United Kingdom that seeks World Cup qualification through the playoffs.
