President Miguel Diaz-Canel denies talks between Cuba and the United States

by Ed Newman

From his X account, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has denied there are discussions with the U.S. government.

Here is the president’s message, published early Monday morning:

There are no talks with the U.S. government, except for technical contacts in the area of migration.

We have always been willing to engage in serious and responsible dialogue with the various U.S. administrations, including the current one, on the basis of sovereign equality, mutual respect, principles of international law, reciprocal benefit without interference in internal affairs, and with full respect for our independence.

The origin and extreme tightening of the blockade are unrelated to Cubans residing in the U.S., who were driven there by this failed policy and by the privileges of the Cuban Adjustment Act. They are now victims of the change in policies toward migrants and the betrayal of politicians in Miami.
There are bilateral migration agreements in force that Cuba scrupulously complies with.

As history demonstrates, for relations between the U.S. and Cuba to move forward, they must be based on international law instead of hostility, threats, and economic coercion.
