President Miguel Díaz-Canel praises work of Cuban press in the Revolution

by Ed Newman

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, congratulated Cuban journalists on the country’s Press Day, which is celebrated in tribute to the founding of the newspaper *Patria*.

On X, the Head of State referred to the Cuban press as a worthy companion in all the battles of the Revolution, both within and outside the Homeland.

He noted that it “has always told the story from the trenches—whether amidst the hardships of daily life or during internationalist missions.”

Furthermore, he asserted that—alongside combatants, doctors, teachers, and builders—the press “has been, and remains, a soldier in the Martían spirit demanded by the fight when facing the enemy.”

On March 14, 1892, the newspaper *Patria* appeared in New York, founded by José Martí to “contribute to the organization of Cubans and Puerto Ricans abroad, and to maintain the bonds of friendship uniting the various independence groups with one another, as well as with all men willing to fight for the emancipation of their peoples.”

To honor the founding date of this newspaper, March 14 has been celebrated as Cuban Press Day since the early 1990s.
