Prestigious Mexican daily newspaper publishes appeal for support of Cuba

by Ed Newman

The prestigious Mexican newspaper La Jornada has called for support for Cuba and published a bank account for collecting donations from those who wish to contribute to the purchase of goods for the island.

“We make a firm call for solidarity with the Cuban people and an end to arrogant and aggressive unilateralism,” declared the more than 200 signatories in the appeal, including writer Elena Poniatowska, Spanish intellectual Ignacio Ramonet, and newspaper executives.

In the statement titled “Cuba’s Destiny Is Not Alien to Us,” they also urged support for “all governmental or citizen actions undertaken to protect the well-being, integrity and human dignity” of the Caribbean nation.

The signatories announced a Banorte bank account for the Civil Association Humanity with Latin America: 1358451779, with interbank code 072180013584517792, to collect financial contributions from those who wish to help purchase food.

They also requested medicine, generators, and “other essential products for the resistance of our brothers and sisters.”

They stated that “in this difficult time for the sovereignty of Latin America, the criminal siege of the island” is especially painful for Mexicans.

“Those of us who have signed this call to support its people believe it would be an outrage not to do so, at a time when the United States government intends to subdue them through hunger and deprivation by intensifying the blockade.”

The signatories highlighted the shared history with Cuba, the centuries-long brotherhood between the two countries, the mutual support during hurricanes and epidemics, and the fact that Cuban doctors “have walked our paths and healed our ailments.”

“This is not interference in ‘other people’s conflicts.’ The current aggression against the Cuban people and their legitimate government offends those in Mexico and elsewhere who identify with their humanism and universal fraternity.”

Regarding the recent threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on nations that supply fuel to Cuba, they reiterated that these are illegal, inhumane, and unjustified measures that severely affect the Cuban people.

They asserted that respect for and sovereignty of nations—which originally and always resides in the people—must continue to be the cornerstone of coexistence among nations and of the aspirations for a more just and peaceful world.

If circumstances require it, they added, “we will call for support for the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum, in the face of any retaliation that Mexico may face for complying with the mandate of the Constitution regarding principles such as the self-determination of peoples.”
