by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, December 17 (RHC) – Paris Saint-Germain of France defeated Flamengo of Brazil on penalties today in the final of the Intercontinental Cup.

The 90 minutes of regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Georgia scoring for the European champions in the 38th minute, and Jorginho of Italy and Brazil equalizing for the Copa Libertadores winners in the 62nd minute from the penalty spot.

With nothing significant happening in extra time, the match went to penalties, where Flamengo’s performance was disastrous, converting only one of their five attempts.

PSG thus secured their first Intercontinental Cup, the sixth title of the year for Spaniard Luis Enrique, the third manager to achieve such a string of successes after his compatriot Pep Guardiola in 2009 and German Hansi Flick in 2020.

For Felipe Luiz’s Flamengo, this would have been their second Intercontinental Cup, following their victory against Liverpool in 1981.
