Russia demands end to U.S. blockade against Cuba

by Ed Newman

Russia demands an end to the illegal blockade of Cuba, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told the TASS news agency in Moscow.

“We insist that Cuba’s security be guaranteed.  We demand an end to the completely illegal and illegitimate blockade of the island,” the Russian diplomat emphasized.

Later, Ryabkov stressed that he was confident that the results Washington expects from this blockade will not be achieved in the future.

It was previously reported that the Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin, which was carrying humanitarian aid, docked in the port of Matanzas, Cuba, on March 31, with more than 100,000 tons of fuel.

The situation in Cuba has deteriorated drastically since the end of January 2026, following the implementation by the United States of measures aimed at completely blocking fuel supplies to the island.

The energy situation has become critical: in March, the national power grid failed three times, causing prolonged blackouts across the country. At the same time, the nation is suffering from a severe shortage of gasoline and diesel.

Some foreign airlines have announced the suspension of flights to Cuba due to the lack of jet fuel at its airports, which makes refueling impossible.
