Russia prepares to send second oil tanker to Cuba

by Ed Newman

Russia plans to send a second oil tanker to Cuba amid the energy crisis gripping the Caribbean nation, according to an announcement by the Eurasian country’s Energy Minister, Sergey Tsiviliov.

“Cuba is completely blockaded, isolated; where did the oil supply come from? A Russian ship broke the blockade; a second ship is being loaded right now. We will not abandon the Cubans,” Tsiviliov stated on the sidelines of the Energoprom-2026 forum, taking place in Kazan.

Cuba is currently experiencing a severe energy crisis, which is impacting all sectors of the economy.

Previously, the Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin arrived in Cuba with a humanitarian shipment of 100,000 tons of crude oil.

The New York Times reported earlier that the U.S. Coast Guard would not block the passage of the Russian oil tanker, despite the energy embargo imposed by Washington on the island.

On January 29, Trump signed an executive order allowing the U.S. to impose tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba.

Washington’s actions have caused a severe fuel shortage in Cuba, affecting electricity generation and key sectors of the economy, such as transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel denounced Washington’s “energy blockade” and considered it “condemnable that a power, with the size of the U.S., would adopt such an aggressive and criminal policy toward a small nation.”
