The Third Social Summit of the Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean is underway in Santa Marta, Colombia. Its purpose is to foster dialogue among the region’s civil society to address common challenges such as migration.
The IV Summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) will begin tomorrow, Sunday, in the same city. Before that, the opening ceremony of the social gathering will take place.
The organizers of the civil society event, attended by representatives from nations in the region, previously announced that the objective is to contribute to fostering peace, democracy, and regional unity.
“From our diversity and with the aim of strengthening our integration, we invite you to build and participate in the Third Social Summit of the Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in Colombia, within the framework of the historical need that the country and the continent face to defend our region as a Zone of Peace,” the call states.
The meeting, which continues previous initiatives, aims to foster “greater levels of participation and political influence in CELAC as an institutional mechanism of the States, from a popular, democratic, sovereign, inclusive, anti-patriarchal, and environmental perspective, with a national, regional, and international reach.”
The Summit seeks, in addition to establishing a joint agenda for organizations and social movements as a contribution to the integration of the countries and nations of Latin America and the Caribbean, to determine pathways for dialogue and interaction among the governments and social entities of the region.
