The 120 activists from 23 countries comprising the solidarity brigade “65th Anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples” were welcomed here to begin a program honoring Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, founder of ICAP on December 30, 1960.
Fernando González Llort, president of the institution, welcomed the contingent this Monday and thanked the municipal authorities and the staff of the Grandes Alamedas school for sharing Teacher’s Day with friends from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania, and the United States.
He told the brigade members that their presence in Cuba is a testament to their commitment to justice, peace, and fraternity, and highly valued their participation in this contingent, considering it an act of courage and solidarity.
He emphasized that throughout these 65 years, ICAP has been a bridge between Cuba and the world for the exchange of ideas, cultures, and mobilization efforts in support of the just causes of the people and against the inhumane economic blockade imposed by the United States on the island.
In his remarks, González Llort highlighted the upcoming celebrations of ICAP’s 65th anniversary, from the 27th to the 29th of this month, in which more than 260 friends from nearly 30 nations will participate, including the activists who just began their two-week stay in Cuba this Monday.
María Elena Franca, a Brazilian teacher, welcomed the enthusiastic meeting of the group with teachers, students, and ICAP staff, advocating for greater friendship, peace, and for a Cuba free from the blockade.
The staff of the center joined in welcoming the group at the event commemorating Teachers’ Day, where Coralia Hernández Rodríguez, a local leader in the sector, emphasized the importance of their commitment to educating new generations.
Organized under the theme “65 Years of Love for Cuba,” the brigade will participate on the 27th in a panel discussion about Fidel Castro and solidarity; in the presentation of a book about the Institute’s history; in the unveiling of a commemorative stamp; in a volunteer work marathon; and on the 29th in the main event celebrating the ICAP anniversary.
