Sri Lankan newspapers republish Cuba’s complaint against the U.S.

by Ed Newman

The newspapers Lanka Leader, Sri Lanka Guardian, and Colombo Times republished Cuba’s complaint this Thursday about the US intimidation maneuvers linked to the upcoming vote on the blockade at the United Nations.

The Sri Lankan publications published in full the statements by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, which expose the US administration’s blackmail tactics to undermine international support for the lifting of Washington’s economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the Caribbean nation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the US government’s actions violate the sovereignty of states and the right of each nation to freely decide its vote in the United Nations General Assembly.

Rodríguez presented copies of official communications sent by Washington to numerous governments in which, he claimed, “crude pressure, direct threats, and slanderous arguments” are used to dissuade countries, especially in Latin America and Europe, from continuing their support against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.

He explained that Washington’s pressure includes the refusal of third countries to supply spare parts or fuel to Cuba, as recently occurred with one of the country’s main thermoelectric plants, directly affecting the national electrical system.

The minister assessed that this “illusory anxiety” reflects the growing isolation of US foreign policy and its fear of another overwhelming condemnation in the General Assembly.

The UN General Assembly will debate and vote on the resolution against the blockade for the thirty-third time on Tuesday, October 28th and Wednesday, the 29th.
