Support for Cuba grows strong in Italy amid U.S. threats

A report published over the weekend highlights that throughout Italy, mobilization in support of Cuba is growing among broad political and social sectors in the face of increased pressure from the United States, which violates international law.

An editorial posted on the website of the newspaper Il Faro di Roma points out that, for the Italian people, supporting the Cuban Revolution in the face of the intensification of aggression from US imperialism means “opposing a system of global coercion that uses the blockade as a weapon of covert warfare.”

“What is happening today represents a qualitative leap, as the tightening of measures, the threats of military intervention, and the pressure on third countries to sever economic ties with Havana constitute a veritable siege,” the text states.

Cuba is facing unprecedented levels of economic and political pressure, it expresses, adding that the clear objective of such actions is “to subdue a country that, since 1959, has opted for sovereignty, social justice, and internationalism.”

The statement highlights the fact that more and more organizations are joining the call, launched by the National Association of Italy and Cuba (ANAIC), for a demonstration in Rome on April 11 in support of the island nation, in response to the increasing threats from Washington.

Specifically, reference is made to the presence at this demonstration of the youth organizations Alternative Student Opposition (OSA) and Cambiare Rotta, along with parties such as the Network of Communists, People’s Power, the Italian chapter of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity, and the Association for Peace Journalism.

The call for this march also has the support of important groups such as the Global Peace Mobilization Network, the Agency for Cultural and Economic Exchange with Cuba (AICEC), the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), the Base Trade Union (USB), and the Communist Party.

It is also supported by the ARCI Social Promotion Association, the “La Villetta for Cuba” Association, Socialist Homeland, the Communist Refoundation Party, Seeds of Peace, as well as associations of Cubans residing in Italy and other political and social organizations in solidarity with Cuba.

“Supporting Cuba today means defending the idea that an alternative to global capitalism is possible, opposing an international order based on the law of the strongest, and reaffirming the principle of self-determination of peoples.

That is why taking to the streets of Rome is not a mere ritual gesture. It is a necessary political act, to break the blockade, to defend sovereignty, and to reaffirm, once again, that the Cuban Revolution is not alone,” adds the editorial published by Il Faro di Roma.
