Havana, September 12 (RHC) – Tokyo’s National Olympic Stadium is ready to host the World Athletics Championships, with more than 2,000 competitors representing nearly 200 countries.
Mitsugi Ogata, president of the event’s Organizing Committee, stated at a press conference that the hosts will extend a warm welcome to all participants and pack the stands to enjoy the greatest track and field spectacle on the planet.
This is the third time Japan has hosted a World Athletics Championships, having hosted the event in 1991 in Japan and then in Osaka in 2007 at its legendary Nagai Stadium.
The competitions will kick off this Saturday, the 13th, with the finals of the 35 km race walk for both men and women, the men’s shot put, the women’s 10,000 meters, and the mixed 4×400 relay.
Athletes registered in the women’s discus, women’s long jump, and men’s pole vault will also compete for a spot in the finals. There will also be preliminary heats in the 100 m dash for both men and women, the women’s 1,500 m, and the men’s 3,000 m steeplechase.
Also present at the event’s welcoming press conference were British Olympic champion Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, and Yuko Arimori, member of the World Athletics Council and President of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations.
