U.S. blockade affects Cuban biotechnology

by Ed Newman

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade caused severe damage to the national biotechnology industry between March 2024 and February 2025.

The Torricelli Law, which prohibits the sale of inputs and raw materials to this sector, generated estimated losses of $129,270,000, according to the official report.

At the Finlay Vaccine Institute, 14 procurement operations for reagents and essential materials were interrupted, limiting the production of medicines for the population.

Medsol Laboratories faced the shutdown of an encapsulating machine from the German firm Harro Höfliger, whose manufacturer suspended the supply of spare parts due to the restrictions. This decision caused losses exceeding $1 million and reduced the availability of omeprazole, fluconazole, and oseltamivir.

The inability to export the Cuban drug Heberprot-P, the only one in the world for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, to the United States prevented revenues of nearly $90 million during the period.
