U.S. blockade prevents acquisition of oncology equipment in Cuba

by Ed Newman

The Cuban healthcare system is unable to acquire essential equipment for the treatment of cancer patients due to the blockade imposed by the United States, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced on Monday.

On his account on the social media platform X, Rodríguez noted that a year has passed since he requested a license from OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) to export cobalt equipment, air compressors, and spare parts for medical equipment to Cuba, without receiving any response to date.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs described this policy as “genocidal” and emphasized that it has prevented the entry into the country of essential resources for the treatment of people with cancer, directly affecting the quality of life of those in advanced stages of the disease.

Cuban authorities have presented to the international community a dossier documenting the impact of unilateral U.S. coercive measures between March 2024 and February 2025.

According to this report, in just five days the blockade caused $100 million in damage to the Cuban economy—an amount equivalent to the financing needed to repair one of the country’s main thermoelectric plants, such as the Antonio Guiteras or Carlos Manuel de Céspedes plants.
