UN Human Rights Council approves resolutions presented by Cuba on food and culture

by Ed Newman

The United Nations Human Rights Council, at its 61st session held in Geneva, Switzerland, has approved the proposals presented by Cuba focused on food security and culture.

The resolution on the right to food rejects the use of basic necessities as a mechanism of political or economic coercion. The document also urges states to refrain from unilateral measures that affect the food security of other nations, a context in which the Cuban delegation denounced the impact of the US blockade on its population.

The intensification of the embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba, formalized on January 29 through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that allows for tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to the island, directly impacts the right to food for the entire Cuban population.

Trump’s offensive directly affects food security because fuel shortages paralyze agricultural machinery and freight transport. Furthermore, the disruption to electricity generation breaks the cold chain necessary to preserve perishable products and increases production and distribution costs, limiting the population’s access to basic necessities.

On the same day in Geneva, the island’s initiative on cultural rights was unanimously adopted. This text reaffirms culture as a vital element for human development and social cohesion.

As a distinctive aspect, the resolution recognizes the right of persons with disabilities to actively participate in cultural life, understanding this discipline as a bridge that facilitates international dialogue and transcends geographical borders.

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reported that the body also adopted a third resolution on the negative effects of external debt on human rights.

The foreign minister noted that the majority support for these three Cuban proposals represents recognition by the international community of Cuba’s activism and work within the UN Human Rights Council.
