United Nations system “mortally wounded” after attack on Venezuela

by Ed Newman

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil has denounced that the United Nations system was “mortally wounded” following the military operation that resulted in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

According to the high-ranking official, the act constitutes a violation of the pillars that have sustained the world order for the last 80 years.

During his address at the meeting of the Network of Jurists for the Liberation of President Nicolás Maduro and his Wife Cilia Flores, Gil described the operation as a disproportionate and unjustified deployment that left a regrettable toll of approximately one hundred fatalities.

He emphasized that among the dead were civilians and military personnel who were defending the institutional order of the Latin American country and its strategic installations.

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister stressed that these citizens were murdered in a maneuver that disregarded human life and national sovereignty.

Furthermore, the diplomat emphasized that the personal immunity of heads of state is a fundamental norm of international law that does not depend on the recognition of foreign governments.

The top Venezuelan diplomat denounced the kidnapping of the head of state of the Bolivarian nation as a violation of the elements that underpin peaceful coexistence among nations.

For Gil, allowing this precedent “means entering an era where ‘the law of the strongest’ prevails.”

In his remarks, he recalled that Article 2 of the Charter of the United Nations prohibits the threat or use of force, while warning that if nuclear powers act without legal limits, the human species is doomed to disappear.

Regarding the attack perpetrated by the United States against Venezuela, he emphasized that it is not a local matter, but a direct threat to the stability of the entire planet.

Gil asserted that the Venezuelan people, “faithful to the liberating legacy of Simón Bolívar, will wage the battle in the arena of ideas and international justice.”

The Venezuelan foreign minister expressed his confidence that “diplomacy and dialogue will triumph over the violence of aircraft carriers and submarines.”

“The return of President Maduro and Cilia Flores will be the definitive victory of reason over death. Venezuela’s struggle is presented today as the greatest epic of the 21st century to uphold international law,” he said.
