Venezuela reaffirms support for Iran in the face of U.S. military threats

by Ed Newman

Venezuela expressed this Friday its “deep concern” and rejection of the “recent confrontational narratives issued by the Government of the United States of America against the sister Islamic Republic of Iran.”

“Venezuela expresses its firm solidarity with the Iranian people and government, calling for an end to the interventionist positions that compromise regional stability,” the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

“We believe that the use of forceful rhetoric deviates from the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations,” Caracas stated, warning that the Trump Administration’s pronouncements “represent a risk to international peace and hinder the construction of solutions based on mutual respect.”

Venezuela — the statement continues — “observes with concern how Iran is being destabilized through the use of digital platforms to foment internal conflict, a technique typical of Fifth Generation Warfare.” It adds that the situation “is aggravated by the impact of unilateral coercive measures that seek economic strangulation, constituting a strategy of external pressure that violates the sovereignty and social peace of our sister nation of Iran.”

The statement notes that “the Bolivarian Government, true to its commitment to peace, reaffirms that the only path to lasting stability is sovereign dialogue and diplomacy, without foreign interference.”
