Vietnam is deeply concerned about the new US measure to impose additional tariffs on products from countries that supply oil to Cuba, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated this Monday in Hanoi.
This decision, the spokesperson considered, “will seriously affect the economic and social activities and the lives of the Cuban people.”
Thu Hang responded to a question about the recent executive order issued by US President Donald Trump, declaring a supposed national emergency, which would allow his government to impose tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba.
“Vietnam reaffirms its support for the resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly over the years, urging the United States to immediately lift its unilateral embargo against Cuba and to take steps toward dialogue and improved relations with Cuba,” she emphasized.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by stating that Vietnam once again firmly reaffirms its traditional solidarity and friendship with the brotherly Cuban people.
In a statement issued after the signing of the aforementioned executive order on January 29, the Revolutionary Government of Cuba condemned, in the strongest terms, the latest escalation by the US administration in its efforts to impose an absolute blockade on fuel supplies to the Caribbean nation.
To justify such an extreme action, a long list of lies and defamatory accusations against Cuba was presented, the official statement noted, citing among them the absurd assertion that Cuba constitutes an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security of the United States.
The President himself (Trump) and his administration are aware that few, if any, can believe such mendacious arguments, but they don’t care. Such is their contempt for truth, public opinion, and governmental ethics when it comes to justifying their aggression against Cuba, the statement said.
It further emphasized that with this decision, “the United States government, through blackmail, threats, and direct coercion of third countries, is attempting to impose additional pressure on the economic strangulation measures that, since Trump’s first term, have been implemented to prevent fuel from entering our country.”
This event consolidates a dangerous way of conducting US foreign policy through force and exercising its ambitions to guarantee its imperialist hegemony.
The Cuban Revolutionary Government’s statement also signified that the US administration “has reached this point after failing for 67 years to subdue and destroy a genuine and legitimate political and revolutionary process, characterized by full sovereignty, social justice, and the promotion of peace and solidarity with the rest of the world.”
