Havana, June 28 (RCH) - Today, the New York Mets will seek to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates in their quest to regain the lead in the National League East Division as the Major League Baseball (MLB) season continues.
Led by Venezuelan Carlos Mendoza, the Mets have a record of 48 wins and 35 losses and are half a game behind the leaders after losing to their rivals yesterday and being overtaken in the standings by the Philadelphia Phillies.
With a lopsided score of 9-1, the New Yorkers lost at PNC Park in a game where the Pirates (33-50), bottom of the Central Division, unleashed a 12-hit offensive in front of their fans to tie the season series at two wins apiece.
Bryan Reynolds hit a home run with two runners on base for the home team, while the Mets' only run came on a solo home run by Dominican Juan Soto.
Mitch Keller earned his second win of the season after accumulating 10 losses, while David Peterson (5-4) took the loss.
The Mets' stumble was capitalized on by the Phillies, who racked up 17 hits and beat the Atlanta Braves 13-0 to take the lead in the most competitive division in all of MLB.
Philadelphia hit five home runs, including two by Trea Turner, further heating the battle for the lead.
For Saturday, the Mets announced right-hander Paul Blackburn (0-2) as their starter, while the Pirates will rely on left-hander Bailey Falter (6-3).
