Havana, May 17 (RHC)-- The president of the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament) of Cuba and of the Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernández, signed the book of condolences opened at the Uruguayan embassy in Havana on Friday for the death of former president José "Pepe" Mujica.

"From Cuba, on behalf of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz; the president of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez; and the Cuban people, we extend our condolences, affection, and solidarity to Lucía Topolansky, her family, the government, and all the Uruguayan people in this moment of grief," Lazo Hernández wrote.

The head of the Legislature emphasized in his message that Mujica's legacy and pursuit of justice will live on in the memory of all those who fight for a more caring world.  Lazo Hernández emphasized that the former Uruguayan president "was a symbol of resistance and an example of humanistic leadership," reported national television.

He also highlighted that Mujica's public career and commitment to social justice and regional integration "have left an indelible mark on Our America."

The parliamentary leader was accompanied during the signing of the book of condolences by Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal and the Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Eugenio Martínez.

The former member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba was received at the diplomatic mission by the Uruguayan ambassador in Havana, Álvaro Fernando Barba.

On the occasion of the death of Mujica, who maintained historic and friendly relations with the Caribbean nation, President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared a state of official mourning until midnight local time on Saturday. (Source: Prensa Latina)
