Uruguay
Montevideo, Jun 7 (PL) Uruguay began the week in third place in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, but closed the week in fifth place after losing 0-2 to Paraguay last Thursday.
It was at the Defensores del Chaco stadium, which marked a leap in the reverse for the Guaraníes, now in third place and on a nine-match unbeaten streak.
On the other hand, the Uruguayans had one win in nine matches and were unable to score in six of them.
The day before, Colombia and Peru drew 0-0 and Venezuela beat Bolivia 2-0.
If Colombia won, Uruguay would be relegated to sixth place. However, the Colombians did not seize the opportunity.
With the draw, they equaled Uruguay's points, but with a worse goal balance.
The bad news is that on the same day Venezuela beat Bolivia and reached 18 points, only three points behind the sky-blue team, with whom they will face next Tuesday at the Centenario Stadium.
Even so, the goals scored favored Bielsa's pupils, who took responsibility for the poor performance of his team.
Argentina comfortably leads the standings with 34 points. They are followed by Ecuador (24), Paraguay (24), Brazil (22), Uruguay (21), Colombia (21), and Venezuela (18 points). Bolivia and Peru close behind.
In the end, the top six will qualify and the seventh-placed team will seek a play-off for a ticket to North America.
