Puebla Group warns of risk of U.S. military intervention in Venezuela

by Ed Newman

The Puebla Group issued a statement expressing its concern over what it considers an imminent threat of armed intervention in Venezuela. The document calls for the defense of sovereignty, security, and peace in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the context of the deployment of military forces by the United States government.

The statement commemorates the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a “Zone of Peace,” adopted a decade ago by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). According to the Puebla Group, this commitment is at risk due to the increase in US naval operations in the Caribbean, promoted during the administration of President Donald Trump.

The statement maintains that these actions are justified under the guise of combating drug trafficking, but warns that such interventions have already had negative consequences in countries such as Colombia and Mexico. According to the Puebla Group, experience shows that these strategies generate violence, dispossession, and destabilization.

It also notes that the ongoing operation could represent the beginning of a new military offensive, with Venezuela as the primary target. The Puebla Group also mentions recent threats of drone attacks on Mexican territory, which it considers part of a worrying regional trend.

The declaration concludes with a call for unity among the political forces of Latin America and the Caribbean to reject any form of external intervention. The Puebla Group affirms that the defense of national sovereignty and regional security requires a common position, beyond internal political differences.
