Carlos Rafael Fernández de Cossío Domínguez, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, denounced on his social media accounts that the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial blockade exacerbated the country’s difficulties in recovering from Hurricane Melissa.
The diplomat stated on his official Facebook profile that, although solidarity aid was received from governments and organizations, the nation had to undertake the recovery under restrictive conditions not faced by other countries.
Fernández de Cossío clarified that not all internal problems are due to the blockade, as there are inherent limitations that Cubans must address, but he deemed it unacceptable for a foreign power to impose an economic war against the island.
He recalled that, as Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla stated at the UN General Assembly, without the blockade measures, Cuba’s economic problems would have a quicker and more effective solution.
The deputy minister added that, if this policy were eliminated, the national economy could prosper based on its own foundations, even without direct access to the US market.
He emphasized that the deprivation of the right to compete and access the international economy on equal terms forces the nation to face greater obstacles in its recovery.
These statements come in the context of recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, which caused damage in several eastern provinces of the country.
