Colombian President Gustavo Petro attributes Summit of the Americas failure to U.S. “ideological hatred”

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called the Summit of the Americas a failure, attributing it to the “ideological hatred” of the United States.  This statement comes after the Dominican Republic government announced the postponement of the event until 2026, amid regional disagreements over the US military campaign in the Caribbean.

“A summit that, including all the American republics and Canada, should have been the stage for a sincere, pragmatic, and constructive dialogue has failed.  What a shame!” the president wrote in X.

Petro directly pointed the finger at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accusing him of “wanting to hold a Summit of the Americas excluding countries.”

He reaffirmed that the summit “must include everyone, be pragmatic and constructive, and strive for a greater America, from Alaska to Patagonia.” His stance was predictable, since in October he had announced he would not attend after learning of the decision by Luis Abinader’s government in the Dominican Republic to exclude Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

This exclusion comes amid escalating tensions with Washington over its military operations. Since August, the U.S. has deployed warships, a submarine, fighter jets, and troops off the coast of Venezuela, carrying out several bombings against alleged “narco-boats” in the Caribbean and the Pacific, resulting in dozens of deaths.

Meanwhile, Washington accused President Nicolás Maduro, without evidence, of leading a drug cartel and doubled the reward for his capture. In mid-October, President Donald Trump admitted to authorizing covert CIA operations in Venezuela, to which Maduro responded by questioning the supposed novelty of such actions.

These operations have been condemned as acts of aggression by Caracas. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and experts from the organization have criticized the bombings, calling them extrajudicial executions that have resulted in more than 60 deaths.

The governments of Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil have also expressed their rejection of these actions, stating that they constitute “summary executions” contrary to international law.
