Dominican forces affirm summit postponement a defeat for the U.S.

The Communist Party of Labor (PCT) and the Broad Front (FA) on Tuesday described the recent postponement of the 10th Summit of the Americas, to be held in the Caribbean country, as a political defeat for both the Dominican government and the United States.

Both organizations believe the summit will take place in 2026 due to contradictions, diplomatic pressure, and the region’s widespread rejection of the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

They maintained that “the decision by the Luis Abinader administration to follow the exclusionary lines dictated by the United States has backfired diplomatically, ultimately isolating the country and demonstrating the failure of a subordinate and undignified foreign policy.”

The decision not to invite three sister nations—Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua—was an unpopular and reactionary act that could only lead to the discrediting of the event and the political isolation of those who promoted it, stated Manuel Salazar, Secretary General of the PCT.   He declared that “the postponement of the Summit constitutes a moral and political defeat for Abinader and for U.S. imperialism in the region.”

The two political forces recalled that, following the announcement of the exclusion, several progressive governments in Latin America, including Mexico and Colombia, expressed their disagreement and decided not to participate.

They agreed that this weakened the event and exposed the lack of legitimacy of a forum that purported to discuss democracy and cooperation while excluding sovereign countries for ideological reasons.

“The failure of this Summit confirms that the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean are not willing to accept imperial tutelage or exclusions imposed from Washington.”

“The Dominican Republic, instead of being an instrument of this anachronistic policy, should have been an example of sovereignty and regional solidarity,” stated María Teresa Cabrera, president of the Broad Front (FA).

The Communist Party of Cuba (PCT) and the Broad Front reiterated their unwavering solidarity with the peoples and governments of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and reaffirmed their commitment to Latin American unity, self-determination, and mutual respect among nations.

They denounced the Dominican government for betraying these principles by aligning itself with the dictates of U.S. foreign policy.

“This Summit was not postponed due to natural or technical reasons, but rather due to the political failure of a model of hemispheric relations based on exclusion and obedience.

The peoples of Latin America have spoken: dignity and integration are worth more than any empty summit,” they stated.

The Communist Party of the Dominican Republic (PCT) and the Broad Front (FA) called on all popular, democratic, progressive, and patriotic forces in the country to maintain an active and critical stance against policies of subordination and subservience, and to strengthen a sovereign, dignified, and inclusive alternative for the Dominican Republic.

The day before, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the postponement of the 10th Summit of the Americas, scheduled for next December in Punta Cana, due to regional disagreements that are hindering dialogue.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed that, in 2022, when it assumed responsibility for organizing the Summit, “the profound disagreements that currently hinder productive dialogue in the Americas were unforeseeable.”

It added that this situation is compounded by the impact of recent weather events that have severely affected several Caribbean countries.

He indicated that after a careful analysis of the situation in the region, the government decided to postpone the meeting, and noted that this decision was “agreed upon” with its closest partners, including the United States, the statement specified.
