Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, criticized those who, amidst the recovery of the provinces affected by Hurricane Melissa, label the Revolution as a failed state.

While presiding over a session of the National Defense Council, and in his capacity as president of that body, Díaz-Canel responded to the campaign of hatred that seeks by all means to discredit the country’s efforts and disguise the criminal effect of the blockade on the economy and daily life on the island as the incapacity of the Cuban revolutionary state.

“We asked them, then, if a failed state could face a hurricane like Melissa and overcome the challenge of protecting the lives of the people in very critical moments for the economy,” he said in the closing moments of the meeting, broadcast live on the program “From the Presidency” on the Mesa Redonda program at the Palace of the Revolution.

“What the haters don’t realize is that when they use that phrase, they forget that in Cuba, the state is all of us,” he clarified later, adding that the social fabric that the Revolution has created in city blocks, neighborhoods, and communities is more powerful than a typical state. The power of the people, that is true power, and in recent days we have seen that slogan transformed into reality.

He noted that a week later, the wounds left by Melissa in its two passes through Cuba continue to challenge us; and the days drag on for those waiting for electricity, water, food, and the essential materials to rebuild what the storm took, he added.

But we reiterate to everyone, we assure you that no one will be left to their fate; the Revolution is alive, it will always be alive, and therefore, its children will always be safe.

The President of the National Defense Council stated that what he has seen in recent days during tours of the hardest-hit areas is doubly impressive because of the destruction, of course, but also because of the unwavering nobility of this invincible people.

Some will say it’s in the Cuban DNA, resilient like our palm trees that can bend, but he affirmed that there is something more powerful: the unity of the nation in the face of danger and the humanitarian work of the Revolution.

The president emphasized the admirable reaction of everyone who feels Cuban when called upon to support those who have all lost so much.

He also warned that the extent of the damage caused by the hurricane in the eastern region, so profound that it cannot be healed in a few days, will delay the recovery of its territories.

Several ministers or heads of agencies, leading the working groups of the National Defense Council, reported on the damage caused in their sectors or branches and the actions undertaken for recovery.

The presidents of the Provincial Defense Councils of the eastern territories also reported, expressing their gratitude for the support of the country’s leadership and the attitude of the population, even amidst severe hardship.
